Yes. I have registered for…
…..The 88th Comrades – UP RUN!
So it goes without saying…BLOOD, SWEAT, TEARS, SACRIFICES, MENTAL STRENGTH, BELIEVING IN YOURSELF (WHEN IT FEELS LIKE NO-ONE ELSE IS… NUTS I KNOW!), DISAPPOINTMENTS, TOTAL PERSEVERANCE!!!! AMIDST ALL OF THIS NOT TO FORGET TO HAVE FUN, RUN IN RACES ALL OVER SOUTH AFRICA, MAKE NEW FRIENDS …NOT BEING SCARED...TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES AND FIND OUT WHAT MY BODY IS CAPABLE OF, NOT TO HOLD BACK…KNOWING THAT THE HARDEST PART OF COMRADES IS GETTING TO THE START!..THAT WHATEVER HAPPENS ON THE DAY…I HAVE WON.
I AM ULTRA-ORDINARY.
I love running. I stumble across the sport by accident in 2010 in my pursuit to shed some extra kilos. So by no means am I a fast runner. In fact I am your ordinary back-of-the-pack runner. Running has become my sport, my new lifestyle and I want to keep improving at it; see what I can achieve if I put my mind to it and do the hard work. Training for Comrades is going to be difficult. I know. I have seen the training schedules, read the books and blog reviews. Absolutely crazy that this race even make the elite cry, crawl, collapse – I have seen it all happening on TV!
I have been blessed with an amazing husband and kids. I love them dearly and have asked for forgiveness in advance – they have accepted that I am obsessed with running. Tasks have already been assigned to each of them along the Comrades route. They all signed my Comrades Commitment card. I won’t be able to do this without their support. They are as much a part of this journey as I am – they are…my Ultra Ordinary Family.
Comrades is all about the “journey” in preparing the body and mind for the grueling 89km run. The build-up is going to be tough. I have to train for and run my qualifying marathon in early March 2013, which will then see me to the peak Comrades training period, running hundreds of kilometers during March and April before the taper in May (and guard against getting sick – “Paronoid” will become my new surname!) and then finally THE ULTIMATE HUMAN RACE on the 2nd of June 2013…on my brother’s birthday making this day just the more special :-).
