25 Mental Mantras

Standard

Training is back on track..I think. Really excited about my new training programme. Busy reading a book that provides a whole new perspective on training smarter for 40+ runners :-). Never thought I would be reading stuff like this but at age 40 I am stronger and healthier than I’ve ever been and I would like to keep it that way for as long as I can. More about the training concepts of this book in upcoming posts.

4 weeks to go before my goal race, have to admit I would have wanted 4 more weeks to train, but I am not confident enough that I would make the cut-off of the other qualifying races..they are rated more difficult, so why risk it. Right? πŸ™‚

I did some race prep work – I went to have a look at the race route. It looks doable. The issue is the distance…distance…distance…distance…. The only things that would stand between me and qualifying is “HITTING THE WALL” at 30km. I know what is what happens to me at the city to city race when I started getting cramps in my one calf…from there on my pace slowed down dramatically, cos bailing was NOT and option. Don’t want that to happen again so I’ve started to take some vitamins (magnesium and iron) and making sure I am eating properly after training (Thanks Ester!)

So what’s left to do. They say the last 10km of a marathon is all mental. No amount of training can prepare you for it. Remember, Β you never really run the full distance of 42.2 km in training. It is just too hard on the body. Your longest run in training is normally only 30km..at least 2 times, so the last 10-12km is normally unfamiliar territory, especially if it is your first marathon. You enter the unknown…Where you really have to dig deep and tell yourself NOT to QUIT!!! So I am really going to work on mental strategies and mantras to get me through the last 10km. So here I go…

1. Pain feel so much better than REGRET…

2. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it…

3. Pain is weakness leaving the body…

4. Losers let it happen, winners make it happen…

5. Dont Quit!…

6. RESPECT the DISTANCE (when training); TRUST the TRAINING (when racing)

7. One foot in front of the other, one fuckin foot in front of the other…lol! πŸ™‚

8. No pain, no gain…

9. PAIN is TEMPORARY, PRIDE is FOREVER…

10. Losers quit, winners train…

12. On the much more positive side: Running is the “All Me Show” starring ME! πŸ™‚

13. Never say die…

14. There are two types of people, those who run and those who should…

15. Quiting is not an option, now FINISH…

16. If it don’t kill you, it will make you stronger

17. He who is patient wins…

18. People do not lack strength, they lack will…

19. Tough times don’t last, tough people do…

20. The faster you run the quicker you done…

21. Every freakin mile that was in front of you, that is now behind you, freaking counts…

22. HILLS : I do it because I love, I do it because I can…:-) πŸ™‚

23. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it

24. Nothing lasts forever…

25. PERSISTANCE IS INSPIRING…

Leave a comment if you have any good mantras :-).
