Thinking of Running a 50km Ultra-Marathon Race?

So exactly what does it take to run a 50km race? How do you go about training for the event. Should you try to RACE on the day, or just hope to FINISH! How long should you train? Do you have to run a standard marathon first?

These are all the questions going through my mind. I’ve done a bit of research “in true me fashion – the analyst in me always have to show up in everything I do!”. There is so much information, I guess the only way to find out is by trying things out for yourself and see what works.

June was a really difficult month for me – still is! If I missed a training day I did not worry about it too much, but I guess that attitude caused more damage to my overall fitness, cos over the last couple of weeks I probably only trained 1 or 2 times a week and even on those days I struggled through the training run. Now I am down with flu and all sorts of ailments again….starting to sound like little excuses ūüôā

So what does it take 50km race?

To be ready and run my Ultra in September I will have to increase my weekly mileage, almost double it. So far I have build up to a 24km a week, this is only a half of where I need to be for my weekly target. I will have to include 2 more training days to push up the milage.

In addition to training runs I will also have to run races, no more sleeping in on weekends:-). I was so diligent with my planning, but have missed two races already! Really need to get my head straight here…but it is so COLD :-). Who in his right mind would want to go and queue at the starting line for a race at 3 degrees?

To be “ultra race ready” I need to have at least ran 2 half marathons and have covered the distance of 30km during a long run three times!!!!

Talk about commitment! Now, I am really scared.¬†I am no longer sure if I can do this, seems like this is just a bit too hard, too much, too soon :-(. Maybe I should give myself more time? I read somewhere, that running the 50km race is not hard –¬†but training for a 50km race is.¬†

A New Training Concept

I have started my official training programme. It is hard but I will try to stick to it. I have my new virtual partner now and I am really motivated by this little atari guy. He seemed to be so full of energy and never stop/walk during a simple workout :). A New Experience…Winter Morning Runs

I did! Got my early run in this morning. It was hard, only realised it rained during the night when I went outside. It was a relatively “warm” morning. Rain was threatening but I decided to push through. Invested in new running tights, so I wanted to try it out. Good motivation to get a girl running :-).

The morning was perfect. So much oxygen in the air after the night’s rain. I did a 6km run which included hills and I did not even felt that exhausted. So, now I am really motivated. If this is what training in winter is about….its is going to be fun :-). And the tights is great! My muscles felt warm and protected from the elements. ¬†No more excused :-).

Now that I have waisted so much time I had to look for a new training programme. Found a nice programme that actually first focus on building speed and then stamina. Want to give it a try for the next 4 weeks. Still want to improve my 10km time to under 65mins so it might help with that…13 weeks to go!
