WOW – definitely more difficult than I thought it was going to be. The race was categorised as a level 1 – so I thought I would be fine especially since I did a level 5 race the previous week! I was so tired the whole week and only manage to do 8kms for the week. I was considering not running today’s 15km race, but time is now slowly running out for me to build up to 21km before my big race so I felt I just have to do. Oi, it was so difficult those first 3kms..was going to call it quits and then I saw the water tables..I slowed down a bit and just tried to pace myself so that I could have energy for the last few kms…which at that point was still a looong way away.
I hit the the 5km at 37min and thought OK…considering how I was feeling, not too bad…but than we starting climbing, I knew from the profile that between the 5-6km and 7-8km there was going to be some hills, nothing compared to the Sunrise Monster I did last week, but I did not had the motivation to run it.
I manage to get to 10km in 1:12 and I felt great as that is my current PB for a 10km so I started to relax…I have passed “firmiliar territority” and started to focus on the last 5km….1km at a time. I knew then I was going to finish and if I really want to push I could actually finish with a good time.
Flats are deceiving…I prefer hills (at least you know what you in for) 🙂
The last 5 kilometers I really had to work hard…even though it was fairly flat I somehow needed to go into the “mental mantra mode” to keep going. I could feel I was getting tired, but was please with my performance so just kept going. The last kilometer had a bit of a downward slope so it was a fairly easy run to the finish, I was so tired. I did not set my heart on any specific time, so did not really care about time at that stage – thought I ran the race well and just wanted to finish my first 15km. BUT then I saw the clock at1:48 and I RAN…I wanted to beat 1:50, cos I knew at the end I was going to kick myself for not pushing through to the finish..also thought it would be great to come in under 1:50 cos than I dont need to worry about breaking into the “1:40s” at my next 15km race cos its done 🙂
I finished with my new PB for 15km 1:49:02 🙂
Quote of the day
“Frustration is the first step towards improvement. I have no incentive to improve if I’m content with what I can do and if I’m completely satisfied with my pace, distance and form as a runner. It’s only when I face frustration and use it to fuel my dedication that I feel myself moving forward.” John Bingham
