I took things easy this morning after all the excitement of this weekend. I can actually feel I am getting stronger. The hills is still difficult, probably will always be, but I feel much more in control. I know how far I can push myself which is a nice feeling. Will be officially starting my peak training period tomorrow…for the next 5 weeks. Have lots of 5, 10,15km races planned. Really excited about them all. There is a few interesting one…Sunrise Monster 😦 and Om die Dam 🙂 and the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge…

Well this morning’s race was truely an amazing learning experience. Even though I have to say so myself – I have come far, from being scared to run alone on the road to waking up at 4:30 am in the morning to go run a race on my own! It takes a while for you to become familiar with the whole set-up of race day. You can clearly spot the veterans, the professional athletes, the health conscious, the weight watchers :-)…etc. However, at some point you all just become RUNNERS.
Deloitte 10km route
I really enjoyed the Deloittes race. Everything was well organised. I decided to abandon the online registration process for races where it is not required, because there alway seems to be queues…trust me you don’t want to be queueing if you “running” late. I registered this morning and the race only started at 6:20 so I had enough time to warm-up, relax and just enjoy the atmosphere with the crowd.
I have trained hard over the last few weeks and was a bit tired this week and deliberately did not do more running…was listening to my body. I knew this race was gonna be tough, “the hills of Pretoria” so I needed time to recover.
For the first time in a race I actually did not worry about heart rates. I just watch my time so that I could pace myself. I was expecting to work hard in the race so I knew I had to run hard right from the start, but still save energy for to finish off well. I ran the race with my coach’s voice in my head – that I’m looking forward to the “walking” in my race. I did adopt a run/walk/run strategy to train for the Two Oceans Half, but my coach feels I focus too much on the walking. So today, I paced myself. I took my walk breaks, but really tried to limit it to 15s at a time…and the results were A M A Z I N G !!!! I chopped off 7 mins from my previous 10km race time, that is equivalent to 1 whole kilometer :-)!

Still struggling with recovering from my long runs, haven’t even had the energy to go out for my easy run. So, decided that it’s time to kick off my strength training. Forgot how easy it ease to burn calories pumping iron. Might need to adjust my training programme a bit and perhaps bring in the 3PLUS2 approach. I know I have to do the strength training, it will help with endurance…I can feel it is working cause my muscles feels a bit sore from this mornings few light swings 🙂
